This is a simple and delicious way of elevating classic mac and cheese. Packaged gnocchi makes a great stand in for macaroni as it doesn’t need to be cooked beforehand, and the pillowy dumplings just love to be smothered in a creamy cheese sauce alongside the verdant broccoli. Makes a great potluck or dinner party dish.
Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the flour and stir well to incorporate. Turn the heat to low and slowly add the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth. Bring to a simmer and cook until just slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. It should coat the pack of a spoon. If it seems too thick, add a bit more milk.
Stir in 2 cups of cheese, the Dijon mustard, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese is melted. Add the gnocchi and bring the mixture to a simmer, then stir in the broccoli and turn off the heat. Transfer this to the prepared baking dish.
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes, or until the edges are bubbling. Remove the foil and sprinkle with the remaining cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese. Slide the dish under the broiler for about 1-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
Note: Use the packaged gnocchi found in the pasta aisle of the supermarket, not the fresh gnocchi.
